Peoples Family
Update |
Theresa Patterson Peoples provided a bit of family
news and some of her remembrances of Aunty Geek and Uncle Dallas to me via
email. I have pasted it in as follows:
News about Theresa and Thomas Peoples: I am the
granddaughter of Jessie Hilburn and my parents are Janice and Dennis
Patterson for those who don't know. Tom and I will have been married for
seven years at the end of April 2001. We have lived in Pennsylvania, outside
of the Philadelphia area, in a small town called Douglassville for a little
more than four years We like the mountains, the four seasons and very little
humidity in the summer months. I have gotten used to the colder temperatures
because it isn't a damp cold. On 8/01, I will have 14 years with Quest
Diagnostics. I used to work in Medical Necessity but now work in 3rd Party
Collections. Tom works for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for the Northeast
Region. His job is similar to that of a paralegal. He travels to Pittsburgh,
Boston and New York city on a regular basis. I love bright colors, in fact
our house is light gray with dark gray trim, white shutters and LIPSTICK RED
garage doors and front door. We get a lot of comments about our red doors.
You either like 'em or you don't! I enjoy planting flowers, shrubs and trees
that bloom with bright colors. I love trying new recipes and doing
embroidery. My cooking/baking specialty is cookies. My most recent cooking
faux pas
was
making Mom's milk corn bread recipe without one key ingredient — the
buttermilk. I also think I put too much baking soda in it, it was very
crumbly and according to Tom was definitely nasty. I love BIG dogs,
especially Labs. If we weren't gone from home for such long hours, I'd have
a chocolate lab and his name would be Hershey. Maybe some day...
Memories of
Aunty Geek and Uncle Dallas
If you wanted to stay at Black Lake longer and get
home earlier, just ride home with Aunty Geek and Uncle Dallas. The trip was
usually done in the pickup truck and sometimes it was a bit of a squeeze if
Richard was along. It never failed, Aunty Geek and Uncle Dallas would have
eaten lots of raw onion and had consumed a few Dr. Peppers while down at the
lake. Thankfully, it was usually the summertime and the windows were down.
If Uncle Dallas wasn't driving to suit Aunty Geek, we'd pull over and she'd
drive. One of Aunty Geek's sayings was "if it won't go any faster, get out
and walk." If it was a really hot and humid day, the air conditioner would
be on full blast but you'd get home so quick you weren't frozen.
One year at Christmas time, I surprised Aunty Geek
with some house shoes. She was very unhappy with me and threatened to hit me
with her cane. I laughed and told her she'd have to catch me first as I was
certain that I could out-run her. She was definitely a giver and didn't
receive very well. Even though, I live further away and didn't get to see
her as much as I'd like to, I did get to spend some time with her before she
went home to be with the Lord. What a precious person and I'm honored that
she was my great-aunt. |

Jon Barker Family
Update |
Jon Barker provided a bit of
family news to me via email. I have pasted it in as follows:
“I guess the biggest news
that we have is Kristy's engagement to Brian Scott which was announced when
we were in Texas at Christmas. He is a fine young man who is also in
graduate school at Southwest Texas in San Marcos, and plans to go to medical
school so he will have a long row to hoe. They are going to wait to get
married until 2003 after they finish graduate school.
Beverly and Russ are both
working as Physical Therapists in San Antonio so if you have any aches and
pains like me then maybe they can help. They have a cat named Copper, which
for now, is their child substitute. They are busy looking for a house to
buy.
Sylvia and I went on a
cruise in the Caribbean in January to escape some of this cold weather. Some
friends of ours, the Pierce's from Centerville Texas, went with us and we
had a great time. We went to four islands in seven days. The food on those
ships is just unbelievable. Unfortunately I gained 5 pounds and haven't lost
it yet.
It was a little cool that
time of year but we did go snorkeling and swam with the stingrays in the
Grande Caymans. Sylvia is already planning the next one for Alaska but that
will probably be after we retire next year.” |
News From Lester &
Melba Dupree and Margaret |
Lester “Dutch” Dupree has
been ill for several years with diabetes, heart problems, chronic
aspiration, pneumonia, etc.
Melba and Margaret are his
primary care givers which is pretty much a full time effort.
Melba also recently had
knee surgery, but continued to take care of Dutch throughout the surgery and
recovery.
Margaret is also in the
recovery mode. She fell, breaking a hip last year, and successfully
underwent hip replacement surgery and rehabilitation. She is making a very
nice recovery. |
News From Allen and
Bobbie Lasiter |
They have been doing fine,
keeping busy since retirement. They are looking forward to the birth of
their first great grandbaby in October 2001. |
Additional
Retirement News |
Two others recently entered
the retirement ranks — Dennis Patterson and Donald Hilburn.
Dennis quit March 2000 and
has been busy attempting to avoid honey-do’s since.
Donald purchased a
retirement home just down the street from Janice and Dennis in June 1999. He
retired (the second time) 30 Sep 2000 and with Dennis’ able assistance moved
into his home from Albuquerque NM.
Both recently purchased
motorcycles for retirement enjoyment, and are planning a trip to the Great
Smokey Mountains in May to see how well they perform ion the twisty roads! |
News About Jessie |
Two days after losing here
sister Bessie, Jessie fell whilst carrying in firewood, breaking her hip.
She, like Margaret, successfully underwent hip replacement surgery and
rehabilitation, and is in the progress of making what appears to be a fully
recovery. She was the “center of attention in the hospital after word spread
that a 90 year old lady had broken her hip carrying in firewood! She is now
walking with a cane whenever she attends Sunday School, and whenever doing
kitchen chores uses no walking aid! |
Special
Congratulations To: Bill and Mary Lou Belcher
