As you no doubt recall, we
have been publishing miracles as provided by Viola Mae (Sissy) (Manning)
Williamson. Here is the last one she wrote about before her death last year.
Wanda was married and living in the Dallas area at the time of her second
miracle. Red and I were living in Morgan City and Mom (Ruth Cain Manning) was
living on Bayou Boudie 12 miles out from Morgan City. One Saturday morning, I
received a call from the head obstetrician (of a Dallas hospital) that Wanda was
in critical condition and I needed to get there as soon as possible. I called
Mom, and Dad brought her in by boat to go with me. We stopped by Beaumont and
picked up Mom’s sister, May Cain Ward.
When we arrived at the hospital, we were not allowed to see Wanda until the
doctor talked to us. When the doctor came, he had very grave news. He said that
he had only seen three cases of this pregnancy complication that Wanda had, two
had died and the one that lived had no brain left. I still could not comprehend
the seriousness of her condition and I do not want any mother to see what I was
about to see. When we got to the unit, we heard a woman making such a noise. Mom
asked the nurse, “Is that Wanda?” She said, “Yes.”
When we got to Wanda’s room, she was in a constant convulsion, nonstop. Her
tongue was almost swollen out of her mouth. She was wrapped in a blanket from
under her arms to her feet with her hands and feet tied to the bedposts. A man
was at her feet to try to help stop the shaking and a woman was there with a
suction cup. They had done everything they could to get her fever down but it
kept rising.
Mom and Aunt May got on the phone and called every pastor they knew (until it
was too late to call) to ask their congregation to pray for Wanda the next
morning at Sunday school because she could not live. The next morning when we
got to the room, the doctor said, “Your daughter has deteriorated during the
night and she will be gone before supper.” Mom went over in front of the window
and Aunt May went over in front of another window and prayed. At about 10:30 or
11:00 AM, (about the time there was a break in the Sunday School to start
church) the convulsions stopped. Her fever started coming down and they untied
her hands and feet.
Mom wet a washcloth and put it to Wanda’s lips. They dropped water on her
tongue throughout the day. That night she had recovered enough to say, “Wa-wa”
to let them know she wanted water although she could not talk. She recovered
completely after several more days in the hospital. This was another miracle
from the Miracle Worker freely handed out!
