The “Christmas Gift” Tradition—Linda Hilburn
Throughout the years, we have enjoyed “getting” each other’s “Christmas
gift” on Christmas Day. The tradition is that the first one to say
“Christmas gift” to another family member “gets” or wins out over the other
person. Jessie says that they never gave gifts, just tried to be the first
one to say this greeting”. We have practiced this with the 5 younger sisters
down through the years. Our family extended this to include Christmas Eve
and New Year’s Eve and New Years Day. For years I didn’t know anyone else
practiced this tradition, but then a co-worker said that her Daddy and the
neighbor would sit up all night long to try to be the first one to “get” the
other ones Christmas gift! We never carried it that far, but if you get a
call on Christmas morning, be quick with “Christmas gift” or you may have
just been taken!
