Editor’s Desk This issue we returned to featuring the second generation in Let's Get Acquainted — Ruth Myrtle Cain and Olon Richard (O.R.) Manning are featured. We also have included some "catch-up" articles left over from previous issues. Meet the Younger Generation features an article about Shelly McCauley Gish, submitted by her mother Joyce McCauley. It also provides a short family update as well. New to this issue is Out of the Mouth of Babes, suggested by Sissy Williamson. It will feature funny stories about kids. We are also correcting two problems from last issue, caused by a technical problem. Transitioning to subscriptions for the newsletter was received almost unanimously by previous recipients! We are grateful that everyone is enjoying the product - enough to help share the costs. In other news, some work has been accomplished on the website. If you haven't surfed over yet, check it out at http://64.216.115.29/index.html. We have added family tree data, the start of photo albums, and done some general housekeeping. If you want to publish family photos, you can either provide the photos in digital format on CD-ROM, floppy disk or via email, or you can mail the photos to me for conversion to digital format. Naturally I'd prefer the photos already in digital format in either JPG or GIF formats on CD-ROM. I am also planning to add a recipe section where one can easily download or print family recipes, and lastly add a "links" page to other websites of interest. Lastly, I want to thank those who have contributed articles, ideas and moral support to the effort. The response to our call for articles has been outstanding. Hope you enjoy this issue! Sneak Preview! Next issue we will feature the younger children of Alan and Mary Lou Belle, Anne, James Author and Hardie. Also if anyone has any have favorite summer vacation tales that you would like share please do so. Also any of the funny or interesting stories about growing up or anything else you would like to tell would be appreciated especially from the younger generation. We would also like more current family news to be turned in, and please don’t forget Out of the Mouths of Babes if you have funny sayings by your children. Decoration Day—A Family Tradition Decoration Day was a tradition in Arkansas where the Cain family lived. It was always held on Mother’s Day but on the Saturday prior, the family would go to the cemetery and clean off the graves and perform other needed work. Then on Sunday, they would take flowers to decorate the graves and have dinner on the grounds. While Decoration Day would have ordinarily been a solemn occasion, they family made it a time to enjoy seeing family and friends perhaps not seen in a long time, while also honoring their mother’s. It has been quite a few years since the family went to decoration day in Arkansas, because we have lost so many in recent years and those surviving were unable to make the trip. Perhaps it is time for our younger generations to take up the torch. Who will attend this year 11—12 May 02 in Arkansas? Meet Hiro Nishi Hiro is a houseguest of Becky and Henry Hirasaki. Actually he is part of the family it seems so we have included him in the newsletter. Becky wrote: Hiro came to live with us a few weeks after he turned 15. This June he will be 25. When I told my friend that Hiro could come live with us I thought it was for one year. Later I asked her how long he wanted to stay and found out that he wanted to stay here through high school. Well, he graduated from high school in 1996 with Ron and went on to Lamar University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration - Management Information Systems, and this May will complete his Master's also from Lamar. He is looking for a job in the United States. The type of job he would really enjoy is one where he could utilize his language skills in both Japanese and English. He hopes to get work in Houston and plans to leave Beaumont. However, we only pray that God will put Hiro where He wants him. Oops — Corrections From Last Issue! On page 2, the Randall Brewster article final paragraph read “Randall’s plans are to attend Jackson Bible College, Jackson, Mississippi, in January 2002. He wants to be involved in some type of ministry during the 3-year course. He thinks he would like to attend the Urshan Bible College in St. Louis also. His great-grandmother, Ruth Cain Manning, would have been so thrilled to know that her great-great grandson is a minister of the Lord.” On page 10, the last paragraph of the poem titled “A Soldier” read: “He was a man of true Christian Character ...a Soldier. While we are sad who are left to mourn his passing, there are others rejoicing at his arrival. The words of a particular song seem to be talking specifically about our "Dutch Dupree." "Strike up the band, assemble the choir, Another soldier's coming home. Another Warrior hears the call he's waited for so long. He'll battle no more for he's won his war. Make sure Heaven's table has room for one more. Sing the welcome song... Another soldier is coming home." I can almost see him salute his Commander-in-Chief as he joins the heavenly ranks.” |
